Remembering My Prep Teacher

When I look back on my early years at school, one name always comes to mind – Ms. Rachael Mycroft, my Prep teacher at Bagdad Primary School in 2001.

Starting school is such a big milestone. At that age, everything feels new: the classrooms, the playground, the other kids, even the sound of the school bell. For me, having a teacher like Rachael made all the difference.

First Memories of School

I remember walking into that Prep classroom, full of bright posters, alphabet charts, and little desks that seemed so big back then. Ms. Mycroft had a warm smile and a calm voice that made me feel safe. She had this way of making learning fun – whether it was reading picture books on the mat, singing songs, or teaching us to write our names for the very first time.

A Teacher’s Influence

What I remember most is how patient she was. Prep is where you first learn how to share, listen, and make friends. It’s not just about letters and numbers – it’s about building confidence. Ms. Mycroft encouraged us, no matter how small our steps were. I think that’s why so many of us left her class feeling ready for the rest of primary school.

The Legacy of a Prep Teacher

When you’re 5 or 6, you don’t realise how important those first school experiences are. But looking back now, I can see how much that year shaped me. Teachers like Ms. Mycroft are the foundation of a child’s education – they spark curiosity and kindness from the very beginning.

Even though it’s been over two decades since 2001, the memory of having her as my teacher still stands out. It’s one of those early chapters in my life that I’ll always be grateful for.
